Athen Kardashian &
Nina Mhach Durban

'Tiles of eyeshadow: the sunshine hair of Monroe, the pink of Gardner’s cheeks, the violet of Bette Davis’ eyes. Diamanté stars, their missing gems creating dull sparkles. Scratched and muddied, peeling around the edges. Inside these tiles are eyeshadows fragile to environment, cracking and crumbling when subject to heavy handed moves, compacted still in their frames and subjective to shifting.'

‘Endlessly generative, Durban and Kardashian’s artworks function as a reflective surface for the viewer’s own cultural memories to play out. They are, in many ways, nostalgic artefacts inherently tied to adolescent aspiration and longing, not just for dreamy boyfriends but for the glamorous life sold to us by y2k-era films and Bollywood romances. – “We watched these incredibly fabulous films growing up where everyone had fabulous lives in New York, and we modelled our own lives around it,” Kardashian shares. “When we think about longing, we’re thinking about this giddy, almost desperate longing we felt to grow up. We wanted to draw upon how young girls use their imaginations to long for and build their perfect world.”’
